How To Make Cannabis Bread

Cooking with cannabis is a whole lot of fun. Check out the recipe below for step-by-step instructions on how to make delicious cannabis bread.

The world of edibles is extremely vast. From classics like cookies and brownies to fancy curries and pasta, people are constantly looking for new ways to work weed into their favourite meals.

In this article, we’ll show you how to make delicious cannabis bread that you can have on its own, or use to accompany a long list of other meals.

BAKING/COOKING WITH CANNABIS: IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER

Before we get into the details of baking cannabis bread, it’s important to cover some basics of cooking/baking with weed.

In order to make psychoactive cannabis edibles, you always need to slowly extract the cannabinoids from marijuana into some kind of fat (usually butter or oil). In this recipe, we use cannabis butter at the end to coat the dough before baking, as well as some ground and dried cannabis added directly to the bread to give it some flavour.

If you prefer, you can easily use cannabis oil instead of butter to make this recipe. Just take your infused oil and drizzle it on your loaf before baking. This will help give the loaf some extra flavour and colour, and will also ensure it contains the “kick” you’re looking for.

INGREDIENTS

1½ cups (335ml) water
3 teaspoons caster sugar
1 litre nonfat dry milk powder
4 cups (512g) all-purpose flour
1½ teaspoons salt
3 tablespoons cannabutter, room temperature
2 tablespoons ground cannabis
2 teaspoons active dry yeast

Note: This recipe will make enough bread for roughly 6 people. Remember, you can adjust the amount of cannabutter to reduce or strengthen the potency of the bread.

INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1

Start by proofing the yeast. To do so, add it to a bowl with water and with ⅛ teaspoon of sugar and wait about 10 minutes. If the yeast is active, small bubbles should start to form around the edges of the mixture.

STEP 2

Once you’ve proofed your yeast, grab a bowl and mix together your dry ingredients (the dry milk, flour, sugar, salt, and ground cannabis). Mix the ingredients together gently with your hands until everything is well combined, then create a well in the middle of the mixture.

STEP 3

Add the yeast mixture to the well and begin to mix everything together with your hands. At first, the mixture will be overly wet in some areas, while others might seem too dry. As you continue mixing, however, the mixture should start to even out. Once it is smooth enough, you may want to transfer the dough to a clean, lightly-floured tabletop and continue kneading it there.

STEP 4

After about 15–20 minutes of kneading, your dough should have a soft texture. It should be malleable enough to form into a smooth ball. If the mixture is crumbly or dry, try adding a tiny bit of water. If, on the other hand, the dough is too wet and sticking to your hands and the surface constantly, gradually add some more flour until you get a dough of the right consistency.

STEP 5

Once your dough is the right consistency, transfer it back into a bowl and cover it either with plastic cling wrap or a tea towel and let it rest until the dough has at least doubled in size. Once it has rested sufficiently, you can move on to the next step of the recipe. If you plan to freeze this dough and use it later, make sure to do so AFTER resting.

STEP 6

Once you’re ready to bake your loaf of bread, take the dough out and place it in a loaf pan. Alternatively, you can also work the dough into small buns or rolls.

STEP 7

Let your loaf (or buns/rolls) rise slightly before baking. Then, spread the cannabutter evenly over the top of your dough before baking.

STEP 8

Bake your bread for roughly 30 minutes at 180°C (356°F). The bread should turn a golden brown colour. To test whether your bread is cooked, firmly tap the bottom of the loaf/rolls with your thumb. The bread will sound hollow when it’s done. Remember, if you’ve decided to form your dough into rolls or buns, these will cook faster than an entire loaf of bread.

USING THIS RECIPE

The above recipe is extremely basic. While it still makes delicious bread, don’t be scared to spice it up with extra flavour. Things like olives, caramelised onions, or parmesan cheese, for example, can all be added to the dough recipe to make delicious flavoured bread.

You can also use this simple recipe to make a superb pizza dough. After letting it rise, simply cut the dough into small pieces and stretch it out using a rolling pin to your desired thickness. Then, place on a lightly oiled pizza tray, bake for a few moments, then load it with your favourite toppings and put it back into the oven until the dough and toppings are cooked.
